24 Jul IRS – ITIN Renewals – New Rule
As you may already know, the IRS requires individuals without a SSN to get an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number). In the past, these numbers were not required to be renewed, but this is the second year of the renewal program. The IRS is attempting to “clean up” their records and “drop off” ITIN numbers that are no longer in use. If you have not used your ITIN in the past 3 years, then it may need to be renewed. The IRS thinks it will take several months for the renewals, and are encouraging everyone who needs a renewal to do it as soon as possible. In order to renew the ITIN, you are required to file Form W-7. There are several ways to file Form W-7, but most people will need to mail them in. If one person in the family needs to renew their ITIN, then the IRS is accepting ITIN renewal for the entire family in order to make the process “smoother”.
Bottom line, if you (or your client) does not have a regular SSN, then I would encourage you to see if your ITIN may need to be renewed.
